As a sequel to Intoxic, Purgus by Angie Gallion continues the story of Alison Hayes after her mother’s death. The questions do not seem to lessen; rather, they continue to torment her. She wonders why her mother had never been like other ordinary mums, always drunk or somewhat intoxicated. Al remembers the devastating moments with anger and an incessant feeling of disappointment. When staying with Leslie, she first discovers true friends whose love is refreshingly not a result of pity. Her restlessness kicks in again. This time she moves with boyfriend Warren to start a new life but the more she thinks about it, the closer she faces the risk of turning into her own mother. Even so, there is hope. Some people are ready to help her stand on her own two feet and there is the possibility that she could belong to a family, her own real family.

Very well told, Purgus is a heartwarming and easily relatable young adult coming of age story. Al has her own flaws but she still stands out as the main character. Angie Gallion sheds light on the cycle of effects arising from growing up in a broken family, and instills hope that the pattern can be reversed. Even though Al seems to be headed on the same path as her mother, with resoluteness and the help of supportive people, she is able to rewrite her own story and reverse mistakes. The result is a charming and neatly plotted story that is bound to warm the hearts of young adult fiction lovers. Highly recommended!
