As an educator, I love sharing books that encourage students to be proud of who they are – stories that promote children to embrace their unique personality traits, and those of their peers. Queen Lillie Dancing in the Park is a great example of a story that builds a reader’s confidence and sense of self, nurturing them to shine in today’s ever-changing society. Saunders Lee writes about a young girl, Queen Lillie, who wears a crown of kindness. Her ‘kingdom’ is a park filled with flowers, the bright sun, and magic words. Queen Lillie visits her magical kingdom daily, embracing its beauty. During her visits, she dances and plays, all while looking for the words of power, strength, and joy that float around her kingdom. Readers are encouraged to join Queen Lillie on her enchanted quest to help her discover what words she sees. Saunders Lee chose strong adjectives, such as intelligent, brave, creative, and important, as the magical words that Queen Lillie sees in the park. These are just a few of the powerful words readers will be able to discuss and identify with when reading this story. A great book choice to use when teaching children about character traits and encouraging them to notice and name their ‘superpowers.’
Saunders Lee's picture book touches upon the social-emotional needs of children today. With easy-to-follow text, the author delves into the concept of loving yourself for who you are. Readers will be captivated by the illustrations – they are engaging and bright. Queen Lillie Dancing in the Park is a predictable pattern book that children can easily choose to dance and chant to. The author uses the concept of ‘freeze’ in the story, which adds to the playful nature of the story; hence, enticing its readers to join Queen Lillie on her word-finding journey. The use of repetition and their word choices makes turning this fun picture book into a movement game or fun dramatic play activity easy. This would make a wonderful addition to school and home libraries - a perfect read-aloud to start conversations about children seeing the strengths in themselves and others.
