Real Magic: A Time Travel Fantasy by Stuart Jaffe and Cameron Francis is about a man named Duncan who is quite the talented gambler (cheater). He manages to get into trouble with the help of his friend Pancake. In order to save both himself and his friend, Duncan must do the unthinkable - steal from his great-grandfather. After sneaking into Pappy's apartment, Duncan finds himself in front of a door his great-grandfather told him never to enter. Imagining the sort of valuables behind the door, Duncan steps inside, only to find himself transported back to the 1930s. After yet another failed card game, Duncan is forced to work for a mobster that wants Duncan to use his skills to find out about a magic door - like the door he transported through. If he doesn't find the magician and the magic transporting door, he risks his life and the life of his new friends.
Real Magic was a captivating story about magic, card tricks, and time travel. The main character, Duncan, starts out as a really unlikable character. He's selfish and a bit reckless, making his money through cheating. As the story continues, he begins to think of others and tries to do the right thing. The book goes into detail about how the card tricks are done, which was pretty cool. I'm tempted to try them out myself. The book had the right amount of action, drama, suspense, and a bit of humor which makes this a good read for almost anyone. I really enjoyed this book and hope for a continuation of the story.
