Rebirth by Debbie Brown is a young adult science fiction story about three teens who flee from their city homes to survive in the nearby mountains. As more and more people vanish, the teens decide the city isn't safe, but they aren't prepared for the children that want to escape with them. Surviving in the mountains will be difficult. There's very little food and three young mouths to feed. Plus, always hovering over their heads is the threat that the alien life form will discover their hiding place. With winter approaching, the group doesn't know how they can get the supplies they need to survive while still keeping a low profile from the surrounding aliens. They need to stick together and not let their different personalities tear them apart. But how can they survive when they are just a few teens hiding in the woods?
This book has a really cool concept that young readers will fall in love with. The story is science fiction for sure, with the threat of the alien life form, but it also has drama, action, and plenty of thrills. There is a lot of tension as the characters deal with their harsh new environment, the weather, the alien force that threatens them, and having to deal with each other and the stress of taking care of the younger children. This is a very exciting story that young people will really appreciate and enjoy.
