Recruiting to Retain by John William Wright II is a well-written book that offers leaders and recruiters a guide to recruiting, selecting, attracting, and developing talent with excellence. John begins by writing about his background, mentors, and career growth, starting from his first job as a janitor in his father's office to becoming a CEO and managing partner of Northwestern Mutual Goodwin, Wright. Using detailed examples, John further explains the reasons behind poor retention and its risk, the twelve principles for effective selection, and more. He also describes what an in-depth interview entails, which includes a personal exploration of the candidate's upbringing, history, and other relevant aspects. This book also offers various tools necessary for identifying a candidate’s natural strengths, which include the Harrison Assessment, SPQ*Gold, which tests for salesperson call reluctance, and more.
This book was impactful to me, as it offers solutions to every challenge associated with recruitment and its impact on a business and organization. I loved that John shared from his personal experiences and interactions with candidates, which made most of the discussions and strategies presented engaging and practical. The questionnaire at the end was very helpful, as it highlights key areas to pay attention to when interviewing a candidate. The writing is organized, well-paced, straightforward, and easy to comprehend. It features themes on recruitment, employee retention, talent development, and more. I found this book to be both empowering and informative. I recommend Recruiting to Retain by John William Wright II to all business leaders, managers, and recruiters.
