Red-Eyed Flight (The Liam and Boo series: Book 3) by William Mierzejewski is a paranormal tale centered around two siblings: 12-year-old Liam and his 10-year-old sister, Boo. Fortunately, the siblings aren't strangers to the supernatural world. The book begins in 19th-century Poland, where a wicked witch, Angelica, swears revenge after her diabolical plans are thwarted during a dark ritual. In modern-day Chicago, Liam and Boo face a terrifying red-eyed, winged beast that terrorizes their town. Angelica is behind these attacks, and her former nemesis happens to be Liam and Boo's ancestor. Local law enforcers, priests, Liam and Boo's family, and their friends all become entangled in the fight, but the siblings must rely on their boldness and each other completely. Will the past’s dark curse destroy their future, or can their bravery and determination save them all?

Red-Eyed Flight by William Mierzejewski offers a gripping and suspenseful adventure. Themes of courage and good versus evil are clearly woven throughout the narrative. This fast-paced horror story transitions quickly between action scenes and calmer scenes of introspection. It keeps readers engaged while also exploring Liam's and Boo’s coming-of-age and everyday life in their community. Mierzejewski places a great deal of emphasis on Liam's and Boo's personal growth and their family's legacy of monster-slaying. Overall, their character development is strong, depicting their ability to persevere under duress, while also embracing their family heritage. I particularly love the world-building in the book—it is both vivid and fascinating. By alternating between modern-day Chicago and 19th-century Poland, the story creates a backdrop that is mystical and intriguing. Even the supernatural elements, including Angelica and the winged beast, add magnificent tension to the storyline. YA horror fans won’t be disappointed.
