ReForm: Combating the Algorithmic Mutation is a work of fiction penned by author Scott Bollens in the dystopian, science fiction, and psychological thriller subgenres. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience. In this high-concept futuristic work with plenty of slow-burning threats, we enter an apparently peaceful new era after an over-dependence on computing has caused mass devastation amongst humankind. But when a supposedly reinvented supercomputer begins to pose a new manipulative threat, an incarcerated investigator is broken out of his institution to help in the fight against the deeply destructive AI. What results is a complex journey of challenges against the human mind, free will, and the power of imagination over automation.

Author Scott Bollens has crafted a superb work of fiction that delves into some of the most concerning and potentially frightening realities of our future. I love science fiction that could almost be science fact, and that certainly adds to the gradual sense of dread that sinks in as we readers begin to discover the interconnect’s true motive and trickery. The plot builds with a reliable pace and deeply involves readers in its concepts. Bollens delivers some really solid world-building that immerses us in the horrifying possibilities of manipulative AI and the weaknesses of the human psyche that can cause devastating results. Jared Rohde is a unique foil for this action to bounce off and swirl around, and his neurodivergent methodology gives the work a highly original perspective from an unusual and inspiring hero. Overall, I would certainly recommend ReForm to fans of hard science fiction and highly inventive, unique dystopia.
