In Renegade by Michael J. Farlow, Paul Aubert, a translator at the Palais des Nations, is secretly assigned to a mission by China to assassinate key players in space and military politics. He prepares with a sniper rifle and sets his targets. Paul’s task takes him to multiple locations, including São Paulo, Dnipro, and India, where he executes several assassination attempts, such as eliminating a guard at a space facility in Brazil and attempting to kill Silva in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Nick Hall, aboard the Argos, investigates the attempted assassination of his father, Commander Van Childs, which he believes is linked to Paul. Nick tracks Paul’s movements across the globe, eventually discovering his role in a larger plot involving China and Iran’s military plans. Paul, now on the run after failing his mission in Dnipro, fights to evade capture while Nick closes in on him.
Renegade: Records of the Argos, Book 4 by Michael J. Farlow delivers a heart-thumping story that comfortably mixes fleshed-out character arcs and some truly multi-dimensional interstellar conflict. While Nick and Paul are the main characters and primary points of view, I really liked the resourceful AI Wizzy and the unfolding events around Federation President Lindgren. Farlow’s writing shines with its cinematic descriptions and tight pacing, and, even though this is the fourth book in the saga, it does read perfectly well as a standalone. However, I would recommend starting with book one, not just because it enhances a reader's connection to the world-building and backstory, but also because the series is good enough to deserve that degree of immersion. With a string of plots and a uniquely imagined universe, this installment cements Farlow's reputation as a master of intelligent, character-driven sci-fi. A must-read for fans of the genre.
