Amr Magdi Moneib’s Requiem Cloud is a great book which gives us illuminating insights to a society which is consumed with hypocrisy and contradiction. The book contains many interesting stories within stories, each one constructed in way that makes reading the most enjoyable activity in the world. Requiem Cloud is a highly graphic, beautifully written book.
It is not just a short novel; it is a picaresque historical account of an oriental society which is torn by contradictions. A society in which everything is superficially understood and the honor of women is shockingly reduced to drops of blood which the girl has to provide during her first night with her new groom. Religion is reduced to practicing prayers, and religious leaders focusing only on which God has forbidden and not on what he has allowed. For instance, Zaki says that TV is forbidden by God, and prevents his daughters from watching it. However he fails to state that God has ordered fathers to be good to their children, not to beat them or sell them as sex slaves. Amr Magdi Moneib’s Requiem Cloud is one of those works in which everything is taken seriously, the ideas in the book are genuine and smart, and the style is very smooth. The book will not only occupy a good place on the shelf, but most importantly it will occupy a good place in your heart.
