Heather Lyn Davis's Riley the Rabbit Learns a New Habit is a heartwarming children’s book that teaches consideration for others. Riley loves jumping. He jumps everywhere, even inside school. However, this quickly becomes an inconvenience, causing his friends and teacher to complain when he lands on someone’s foot, upsets lunch trays, and bumps into people. When his teacher asks him to stop jumping at school, he is upset and asks his grandmother for advice. He expresses his fears about not being able to stop jumping and people not wanting to be his friend because of this. Fortunately, his grandmother soothes him and provides a viable solution. Initially, he struggles with this solution, but when he remembers his friends' needs, he keeps trying.
Riley is a character that is easy for readers to connect with. While he has a bubbly personality and loves jumping since it is so natural to him as a rabbit, he is also self-examining and willing to make sacrifices so he doesn’t hurt others. Riley teaches readers that while it is fun to do the things we love, we should be considerate of others and ensure we aren’t hurting them with our actions. My favorite part of the story was when his teacher observed and rewarded his efforts to make the environment better for everyone. I also loved how his friends found ways for him to utilize his talent for jumping when they saw his genuine efforts. This is a wonderful book about friendship and being willing to make sacrifices for the good of others. I recommend Riley the Rabbit Learns a New Habit by Heather Lyn Davis. The illustrations by Corryn Webb are beautiful and engaging.
