Riley's Time Travel Journey: Exploring Ukulele History is an engaging and educational children’s picture book by Susan Montgomery. We think of the ukulele as an instrument associated with Hawaiian music, but how did it get there and where did it come from? The history of the ukulele is told through the eyes of a cute bunny named Riley. She encounters a ukulele named George. He takes her on a journey through time and space starting in Madeira in the 1800s where the instrument was called a machete. Traveling to Hawaii with Portuguese immigrants, the instrument was renamed the ukulele, became popular, and spread to other parts of the United States. Discussion questions, vocabulary words, facts and figures, and a link with additional materials are included.
In Riley's Time Travel Journey: Exploring Ukulele History, Susan Montgomery gives us a charmingly illustrated tale that brings the fascinating history of the ukulele to life. It joins several other books she has authored and illustrated that feature the ukulele. The soft watercolor pictures are utterly dreamlike, presenting Riley as a friendly and curious bunny to which children can relate. After she returns from her time travels, Riley shares her enjoyment of the ukulele with her forest friends, and George teaches her to play the instrument. This is a wonderful book for introducing children to the ukulele, whether at home or in a school setting. It would be a great accompaniment with a children’s instrument as a gift to encourage an early interest in music.
