Author Biography

Former pastor and teaching elder James Hale wrote a weekly newspaper column called “Mountain Monergism” for seven years, focusing on Reformed theology.

After his time with the newspaper, James wrote for the National Examiner, an online publication, for three years under the title “The Calvinist Examiner.” Additionally, Mountain Monergism produces video content.

The theological depth of Revelation 20 is significant and cannot be overstated. This chapter serves as a crucial moment in the eschatological narrative of Scripture. It reveals blessings, offers Christian hope, and highlights God’s plan to expand His kingdom, ultimately showcasing the triumph of His reign.

The book is organized into several sections to enhance your reading experience. The first part provides an overview of the topic, summarizing the four major viewpoints. Near the end of this section, I present my position on the matter, and in the remainder of the book, I attempt to make a compelling case for my stance. Following this is a critical review of the perspective I once held.

Eight years ago, James underwent a stem cell transplant to treat bone cancer. The doctors successfully halted the cancer, and he is now healthy and writing again.

Broken and Content by James A Hale explores the book of Ecclesiastes and the words of King Solomon. Offering a fresh perspective to readers, James teaches us to tread with caution, so that we too may gain wisdom. Yes, terrible things do happen, but they also serve a purpose. God’s plans aren’t always made clear in the moment, and we will never fully understand God’s motives, but that is the natural order, simply put. James provides eye-opening takes, reminding readers of the importance of living with gratitude and putting their trust in God. Accept that there will always be grievances and know that God’s love is merciful and endless. Exhibiting the necessary faith is all God needs from us. Life is unpredictable, but as faithful followers of Christ, we should plow ahead with a positive mindset and place our fears in God’s hands. James gives a wonderful example of the relationship between Job and God when Job received a profound message from the Creator, and truly came to know His ways. Broken and Content is a thought-provoking guide that teaches readers to apply its rules to their daily lives.

James A Hale writes with great wisdom and insight; I was inspired by his words and clear understanding of the book of Ecclesiastes. I have always wondered why the Bible would even contain a book of this nature, but today it all makes sense, and I am grateful for this book. James maintains an open and friendly tone throughout the guide, and his devotion and faith in God are palpable. Broken and Content is more than just a book; it is a spiritual awakening, and I have not just learned a lot but gained necessary insight concerning the Lord and His wonderful works. James didn’t limit his words to Ecclesiastes but included various other books, showing his genuine dedication to God. Knowing God in your youth will indeed be beneficial even in your old age. I have come to know Ecclesiastes not as a book of despair but as a book of profound wisdom.

Broken and Content presents James A. Hale's reading of Ecclesiastes as a direct examination of what people seek from life and what life can truly hold. Through Solomon’s voice, Hale follows the repeated human attempt to secure permanence in a world governed by time, mortality, and God’s authority. Each page moves toward the claim that the weight people place on ambition, legacy, and earthly security cannot survive the limits of life. Instead, Hale guides the reader toward a way of living that receives each day as given, measured by reverence before God and an honest acceptance of human limits. Written for readers approaching Ecclesiastes for the first time, this devotional offers a sustained account of how broken expectations can give way to contentment.

James A. Hale’s Broken and Content offers searching devotional guidance. Few devotionals speak so directly to modern life’s constant pressure to measure worth by output, reputation, and visible success. This book matters because it meets readers at the point where exhaustion and spiritual hunger often intersect. Hale’s prose is accessible while staying rooted in Ecclesiastes, and its value is practical from the first page: a reader can begin each morning by receiving the day as God’s given portion, and can reshape evening prayer around gratitude for present mercies instead of unfinished ambition. The book also stands out as an exhaustively researched guide, particularly in the way Hale traces 'hebel' through Ecclesiastes as vapor and transience, then sustains that meaning across Solomon’s teaching on mortality and contentment. This devotional will serve adult readers, church study groups, ministers, and anyone living under the weight of constant striving, especially those seeking a biblically grounded way to live faithfully within human limits.

Broken and Content by James A Hale is a well-written book that offers readers a devotional guide, discussing the realities of living in a complex and chaotic world while providing them with hope and comfort from the Bible, particularly the book of Ecclesiastes. This book begins with God speaking to us through the preacher, reminding us of the limitations of human wisdom. The preacher further enlightens readers on how the light of the gospel can significantly impact every aspect of a believer's life. Despite technological advancement and the increasing quest for knowledge, we can only find what our soul truly needs in Christ. This book also explores the doctrines of the Christian faith, the foundational principles for the wise, ten biblical strategies for aging well, and more.

Reading this book led me on a journey of profound spiritual transformation. I think, aside from a devotional guide, this book would serve as a powerful Bible study resource for any believer seeking to understand the Bible and build a lifestyle founded on the word of God. I commend the author for the research invested in this book and for sharing personal stories that made it more inspiring. I loved that all the Bible references were well-organized, and a practical application section was included, which allowed me to reflect. My major lesson from this book was the consciousness of how meaningless my achievements, wealth, resources, and investments will be if not rooted in Christ. The writing is detailed, well-paced, and easy to comprehend. It features themes of hope, transformation, Christian lifestyle, salvation, and more. I recommend Broken and Content by James A Hale to all Christians and anyone seeking to understand the gospels.
