Risky Business, Another Murder is a cozy mystery by Christa Nardi, narrated in the first person by the protagonist Sheridan Hendley, an amateur sleuth and wife of a police detective. Sheridan has an inquisitive mind and savvy computer skills. When a body is found near the school where Sheridan’s sixteen-year-old stepdaughter is about to attend a dance, Sheridan hears the call to action. The police led by Sheridan’s detective husband, Brett McMann, are baffled but Sheridan knows how to uncover even the smallest clues. She quickly finds that the murder victim was blackmailing many of the town’s wealthy and prominent citizens. Feeding the detectives the clues she has found, they assemble a lengthy list of suspects. It’s just a matter of time before they solve the mystery.
Risky Business, Another Murder has a well-thought-out plot that drew me in right from the beginning. Using a warm and engaging writing style, author Christa Nardi brings to life characters whose simple, small-town lives are interrupted by an alarming violent crime. Then she injects the portrait of a seedy underbelly that belies the virtue of their harmonious lifestyle. Nardi kept me guessing by introducing a list of suspects that all had motives for the crime, then deftly eliminated them one by one. Several times the book had me guessing the wrong suspect was the murderer, only to reveal more clues that made me change my viewpoint. For me, it all makes a fine cozy mystery that kept me entertained until the last line.
