Romantic Endeavor by Hermione Lee follows writer Katharina Mendoza, who gradually becomes close to her mysterious new neighbor, Devon Wharton. Initially intrigued by his reserved nature, Katharina interacts with him in small but meaningful ways—shared umbrellas in the rain, meals, and casual outings—which build into a growing romantic connection. Devon, who keeps his professional life secret at first, is eventually revealed as the successful founder of Ethereal Bridal, a global fashion brand, and Katharina becomes both his confidante and muse. Their relationship deepens through shared experiences, including helping Katharina’s sister Alicia with her wedding and traveling together to London. Alongside their romance, Devon gradually opens up about his troubled family past and estrangement from his parents, as Katharina imagines the potential reconnection with Devon’s estranged family.
Romantic Endeavor by Hermione Lee is a slow-burning, wholly character-driven storyline that gives a great mix of romance, style, and everyday life. Both Katharina and Devon are likable characters, and it is easy to root for them as their relationship grows. The aspect that makes Lee's novel unique is definitely Devon’s extraordinary fashion career, and as readers, we are immersed in scenes from intimate showroom fittings to lavish events, picturesque gardens, and elegant London excursions. The depiction of Devon’s creative vision and Katharina’s supportive role is warm and authentic, and the pairing of two varied forms of artistry makes them feel like kindred spirits. Lee captures a sense of wonder in both everyday pleasures and grand gestures, making the world a textured and fully realized space. Overall, Romantic Endeavor is an uplifting celebration of love, partnership, and the beauty of stitching together the bonds of family. Very highly recommended.
