Have you ever found a lost dog and wondered what to do about it? In Sara Deen Kimball’s Rowen and the Animal Shelter, young Rowen and his dog are out playing when they notice a stray dog hiding in the bushes near their home. Rowen tells his mom, and she calls Animal Control to send out an officer to catch the stray dog. Rowen is intrigued to learn about the next steps for this stray dog. He learns about the Animal Shelter and wants to visit it to see how abandoned and lost dogs are cared for. The woman who greets them at the Animal Shelter suggests ways Rowen can help. He gets his friends at school to help, too.

Sara Deen Kimball’s children’s book, Rowen and the Animal Shelter, is a great way to teach young readers about dog care, animal control, animal shelters, microchips, and so much more. Caring for a dog is a big responsibility, something that Rowen already understands as he cares for his own dog. The language is simple so young readers can easily follow along and improve their reading skills. The plot develops slowly, with key information shared in both informative and interesting ways. The illustrations are superb, bright, and colorful, adding an exciting dimension to the developing plot. At the end of the book, there are questions to help young readers remember and share key information from the story. There’s also a glossary of terms and some simple games to improve their appreciation of what was presented in the story.
