In Carolyn Drew’s tale, ROXI the Rescue Dog Helps the Horses, children will discover that kindness can change lives. Roxi has a happy life and hopes all animals are just as lucky. One day, Roxi decides to take a walk down Horse TROT Road to visit the horses. During her walk, she meets two groups of horses. One group is happy, and the other is sad. The happy horses are free to run and play all day. They live in a field. The sad horses work all day. They live inside a fence. This makes Roxi sad. She thinks and thinks. Suddenly, a plan comes into focus, and Roxi gets to work. The main part of the plan is to tell people all over the world to be kind to horses. The message is heard, and the sad horses are set free. When they join the happy horses, everyone celebrates, and Roxi is thanked for rescuing them.
Carolyn Drew writes Roxi the Rescue Dog Helps the Horses with compassion and gentle messaging. For kids, the story’s message is easily understood. For adults who share the story with their kids, the message is emotionally resonant. Her storytelling is clear and purposeful. Majan van der Kooi’s illustrations add details that make both the happy and sad moments memorable. It was easy to connect to the book’s themes of kindness and helpfulness. Young readers will have no difficulty understanding these as they consider how all animals should be treated. I would recommend this book to families and teachers who want a story that illustrates kindness. It is part of the Roxi Helps the Animals series, which focuses on animal welfare and offers several worthwhile reads.
