Ruby, or Rubilito, is a hummingbird who lives in the United States in the state of Texas. Come follow him on his journey from birth to adulthood and learn the lifestyle, duties, and adventures of an everyday hummingbird. Read Ruby’s story and see how you can help out the hummingbirds. Rubilito, the Traveling Hummingbird (Rubilito, el colibrí Viajero) written by Ralph B. Dessau is a bilingual children’s book in English and Spanish, introducing young readers to the concepts of migration, a bit of geography, pollination, and the life of a hummingbird. The author elegantly writes an entertaining and educational story to inform readers about the adventurous, as well as important life a creature such as a small hummingbird can have. Ralph B. Dessau gives his readers many facts about the hummingbird, such as their diet, location, habits, and how they relate to humans.
Upon reading this charming book, I became more informed on the important part hummingbirds play in our environment as a whole, not only for animals, but humans as well. The author and illustrator do an impressive job portraying the facts through very descriptive text and beautiful, highly colorful illustrations. This book can be used by adults and children, or teachers and libraries as an educational resource. The fact that it is in both English and Spanish is a huge bonus for readers. Not only can they read a delightful story about hummingbirds, but they also have a chance to learn new words in a different language.
