In Sammy’s Jungle Day, written and illustrated by Dr. Chelsea Thompson, young readers are transported into a lighthearted and memorable day in the life of Sammy the Sloth. Sammy begins his morning with his usual rest, only to be interrupted by an enthusiastic Tina Toucan inviting him to “come explore, jungle sights you’ve missed before.” Ever the relaxed sloth, Sammy chuckles and asks Tina to bring the jungle to him. What follows is a series of fun and educational encounters with colorful jungle animals, including Jax the Jaguar and Ellie the Elephant. Each shares a playful glimpse of their world through engaging rhymes that highlight their unique traits and daily routines. By the end of the story, they all settle down for the night, and Sammy reflects on the day’s adventures, realizing that true friendship is real and possible, even with those who are very different. The vibrant, expressive illustrations bring the jungle to life, adding warmth and charm to the storytelling.

As an educator, I found Sammy’s Jungle Day by Dr. Chelsea Thompson to be a charming, engaging read-aloud for young children. Its rhyming text, lovable characters, and positive message make it a great tool for exploring themes such as friendship, diversity, self-awareness, and more. It will spark classroom conversations—asking students which animal from the story is their favorite, what it takes to be a good friend, whether you like to sleep or rest like a sloth, and how they are similar to or differ from the animals in the story, sparking their imaginations and fostering social-emotional awareness. The bright illustrations are sure to catch children’s attention during storytime. Sammy’s Jungle Day would be a wonderful addition to any home or classroom library, inviting young readers to appreciate differences, enjoy friendships, and embrace kindness.
