Private investigator Pamela Williams gets stuck in a freak sandstorm in the middle of the Arizona desert. Unharmed, she leaves her vehicle to go and assist others, but something happens to her, causing her to lose her memory. With the help of her therapist, Dr Chantal Moore, she attempts to discover what happened. In the meantime, Pamela gets involved with Jamie Brooks, the wife of Robert Sanchez who died in the sandstorm, and ends up helping her with the life insurance claim. Ex-wives and previous children spring up everywhere, all seeking a cut of the payout, but Jamie wants to ensure that her family is the only one eligible. Mixed in with all this, Pamela’s ex-lover, Peter Tanaka, has returned to Arizona from Japan, and she’s also fighting her feelings for Daniel Mendoza, whom she’s known for years. Can she regain her memory, determine who should get the insurance, and figure out her love life? You’ll need to read Sandstorm Rising by Daniel Maldonado to find out. You’ll be glad you did!
Sandstorm Rising is the first book in Daniel Maldonado’s Pamela Williams Mysteries series, a spin-off of his hugely popular Daniel Mendoza thriller series. There’s no need to read them first, though, as the author cleverly refers back to those stories where needed, and Daniel appears throughout this book. With so much going on in this novel, effective signposting is required, and the author shines here. Even with flashbacks, I was never unsure where I was in the story; that takes some skill. This book has twists and turns galore, and I was second-guessing everything up to the final page. I'm excited that Pamela gets her own series. Sandstorm Rising is an absolute page-turner, and I loved every second of it.
