Saul the Baseball in the Big Game by Kim LeBlanc is an engaging, dynamic, utterly charming tale for children and the adults who nurture them. Chock-full of life lessons and positive messages, this book highlights the adventures of seven animated baseballs – Saul, Ted, Ruth, Joe, Rico, David, and Lynn – all of whom have a chance to achieve their destiny at the hands of batters in an important game. Young readers will delight in the outcome of each ball’s chance to soar while learning that life presents endless opportunities but never guarantees success. Winning is a goal in this wonderful tale, but trying is all: it is only when we make our best effort that we become true champions.

This book has many value-added features beyond the endearing tale it tells: there is a list of baseball facts (rhyming!) to pique a young reader’s interest and a glossary of baseball terms at the end to make sure that their interest continues. All in all, this book is perfect as a read-along or as a resource ideal for encouraging children to read independently. Afton Jane’s bright, upbeat comic-book style illustrations are a marvelous complement to LeBlanc’s jaunty rhyming style, the result being a children’s book as visually appealing as it is stimulating. LeBlanc’s end notes promise additional books in the series, which will no doubt be welcome news for young Saul fans. Saul the Baseball in the Big Game by Kim LeBlanc is an imaginative, compelling American sports adventure for the young and the young at heart.
