Scorpion Deception is the next installment in the bestselling Scorpion spy thriller series by Andrew Kaplan. This talented author is known for being one of the writers of the James Bond classic, Goldeneye and other Spy Stories & Tales of Intrigue. A former journalist and war correspondent, his writing takes on a concise, efficient tone that quickly grabs your attention and holds onto it to the end. This 421-page novel is the 3rd in the series. It continues the saga of Scorpion, a classic spy hero involved in an action-packed, heart pounding thriller that spans the globe, taking readers into exotic corners of the world from Africa to Switzerland to Iran.

Kaplan has created a world and familiar characters. Along with his ability to describe fast-paced action scenes with exciting detail, readers who enjoy classic spy or action thrillers will love this series.
I loved Kaplan’s earlier Scorpion novels. I don’t know if the premise is wearing thin or if the writing seems somewhat forced now, but this installment is not as good. That doesn’t mean it rates less than 4 stars, but it does mean that I hope his story-telling improves. With 3 Scorpion novels released in 14 months, I have similar love-hate feelings about other favorite authors who fast-track serials. What began as a great action thriller, borders on another well-worn story-line with a Bond-ish bad guy named “the Gardner” vs. familiar protagonist, Scorpion, an ex-government operative turned reluctant freelance superspy. As for Deception, for me at least, it’s like an addiction. I just can’t seem to stop reading. Kaplan does a great job writing action scenes and the way he weaves suspense into the plot is why this series is at the top of the charts.
