Second Slice: A Novel of Suspense is a tense work of fiction in the thriller and suspense genres, and was penned by author J. T. Bishop. Forming the second novel in the series following Detectives Daniels and Remalla, we find ourselves in the middle of another enthralling interpersonal drama. The suspect is Madison Vickers, who is wrapped up in the deaths of two men, one of whom is her abusive husband. Daniels and Remalla are all that Madison can rely on to prove her innocence until she meets a bizarre lady who provides advice to look deeper than what she knows already. What results is a mysterious and sometimes surreal mystery with plenty of dark thrills waiting around its corners.
Author J. T. Bishop really impressed me with the psychological qualities of First Cut, so I was excited to get back to the world of Detectives Daniels and Remalla for another piece of the action. This second novel leans more towards the plot intrigues and the puzzle pieces of the crime, though it retains much of the satisfying psychological quality when Madison is faced with the pressure of looming imprisonment versus the fear of confronting that which she keeps hidden. The interior struggles make for a compelling emotional arc, whilst the overarching mystery begins in mysticism and ends with hard truths and sudden twists, giving much satisfaction to those who are following the case closely. Overall, Second Slice is an excellent continuation of a suspense-filled series by a very talented author.
