The reader is not sure why Zane has wakened in a mysterious forest. That’s okay, though, because Zane doesn’t know either. All he wants to do is find his way home, only he doesn’t know where home is. There’s quite a lot that Zane doesn’t know or remember, for that matter. It’s all part of the mystery and the adventure and the journey of discovery. Zane must find his way and understand who he is. Zane must seek his salvation and that of the strange and frightening creatures he meets along the way. There is danger, too, that threatens to poison both Zane and those he befriends.
EP Marcellin’s young people’s Christian novel, Seeds of Fire, is a powerful journey of self discovery that leads to salvation. It is interesting that the setting is this massive and mysterious garden. Could it be the Garden of Eden? All things begin in a garden, so perhaps it is prophetic that Zane’s adventure takes place in a garden. The plot develops steadily as both Zane, the protagonist, and the reader unravel the mystery of who and where Zane is. There is lots of mystery and excitement to keep the young reader riveted to the story. The added fairy tale quality of this story is a bonus. The author is very thorough in the descriptive passages that assist the reader to really feel, taste and be a part of the story, the journey, as it unravels. There is a powerful message behind this story, one that unveils itself in layers as the plot thickens.
