Shadow Trap by Devi Anderson Anton is about murder in a castle-like mansion occupied by more or less eccentric scientists who work on very intriguing projects. Or is it about possession by ghosts? About madness? About accidental poisoning? Nobody seems to be sure what the real reason behind the deaths of the two scientists truly was and Detective Nicholas Faraday has his hands full to solve this case. Some of the residents of the house think the deaths were natural, others suspect murder, and one old lady is sure that ghosts are behind everything that happened. Can Nicholas find out the truth before someone else has a "heart attack"? Who is behind all this? Does the danger come from within the mansion or from some competing company that wants to steal the scientists' ideas?

Shadow Trap is a very interesting book with quite a few twists. It shows human nature at its best and worst. Devi Anderson Anton describes people’s behavior very well and shows how people long to be the center of attention but then quickly act differently if they don’t get the kind of attention they had in mind. Each character has his or her own agendas--and everyone has something to hide.

I enjoyed the colorful language and descriptions very much, e.g., "like a pair of banshees on too much caffeine." I even found myself using this to describe someone else's behavior, and if a book makes me use its language then that's a huge accomplishment because most of the time I couldn't quote passages from a book I've read. Shadow Trap entertained me and kept me awake because I simply had to finish the book. Sometimes I thought I knew what would happen--but then it didn't! I enjoyed it right through to the last page and would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in mystery novels.
