Shadows Fall by Gary Stringer is book three in The Salvation of Tempestria series. It continues the story of Catriona (Cat) and her allies, who are trying to save their world, Tempestria, from dark forces. Cat (a skilled half-faery druid mage), Dreya (a powerful faery sorceress), Daelen (a Shadow Warrior seeking atonement), and Mandalee (a former enemy turned friend) must prepare to confront the dark warlord, Kullos, and his fierce army. Dreya travels to Phitonia, a land dominated by dragons, where she plans to defeat a formidable dragon and turn the locals into her allies against Kullos and his underlings. Cat, on the other hand, must find a way to unite the magical Council of Mages and prepare them for the perilous journey ahead. Can our heroes save Tempestria, or will they lose themselves in the power they once sought to obtain?
Gary Stringer's Shadows Fall is an exciting fantasy that delves into themes of love, power, illegal time intervention, and the characters' ability to exercise personal choice. Each character is complex and intriguing. They are either motivated by ambition, love, or revenge. In this sense, they show that heroism isn’t always straightforward but is a process that the heroes have to grow into gradually. Factors like purpose, personal agenda, and loyalty play an important part in how Cat and her associates relate to one another. The interlaced plot regarding Dreya’s quest in Phitonia and Cat’s mission to unify the Council of Mages is a perfect example of how personal motives can facilitate a good cause, even among nuanced characters and their complicated interactions. Readers who like action-paced fantasies about teamwork, resilience, and self-sacrifice will enjoy this novel.
