Shadow’s Unexpected Adventure by Mary Clark Dalton is an innovative and imaginative story about Shadow, a redwing blackbird, and Bright, a bluebird. The two birds, although from different species of birds, are good friends and enjoy each other’s company. Shadow and Bright pass the time exchanging stories about their stirring exploits while they are apart during the winter season. The two friends are so enchanted by each other’s stories that when the time comes to part for the changing of the season, they decide to swap their lives to experience something new and exciting. The story unfolds as we follow each bird when they venture into the life of the other. To their dismay, they find that living in another’s life is not so exciting as they thought it would be. It turns out to be a learning experience for both birds.
Shadow’s Unexpected Adventure has a special charm due to the illustrations by Adrienne Anderson. The drawings are childlike yet arresting, colorful, and bring life to the delightful, thought-provoking and educational story by Mary Clark Dalton. Ms. Dalton has penned this story to help children reach their full potential and become leaders. She has truly achieved this goal through Shadow’s unexpected leadership. There are other moral lessons that can be gleaned by children enjoying this book. For example, saying sorry and being forgiven, love of family and friends. Parents will find that choosing this book for a bed-time read or must-read story for their children will not be a disappointment.
