Shaila Holmes: Fairy Detective by Lori Keating consists of five mysteries that take one clever detective and her sidekick on mini epic adventures. With help from her adorable hummingbird friend, Itsy, she searches for clues and closes every case. From helping search for a missing marking to helping a scaredy cat, Shaila gets to know different animals and helps them with a variety of needs. Some needs are bigger than others, such as determining who an egg belongs to, while others are simpler, such as finding a missing pie. Each mystery comes with interesting clues, a variety of animals, and lots of magic that guides Shaila to keep their forest home safe.
This lovely chapter book by Lori Keating is an easy read for youngsters. The simple stories are perfect for new readers and short attention spans. Each mystery is wholesome, with quirky problems such as searching for a spider’s marking. Several moments are incorporated throughout to give some lighthearted humor that will keep children laughing. Lori Keating ends each story with the mystery solved and everyone happy. The illustrations by Kyria McKie help create joy with adorable images of the animals and their problems, along with Shaila as she investigates. A lyrical element adds a sweet touch that young readers will love, as they’ll be able to sing along when they read aloud. Children will be introduced to characters like a black widow spider, Eduardo the grasshopper, and cuckoos. Real facts are referenced in the stories, but more are provided after the story ends to engage children in further learning. A whimsical fairy detective story for young readers, Shaila Holmes embarks on adventures where she meets adorable animals, solves cases, and receives help from the cutest sidekick.
