In Chicago, Warren Stevick, a prominent tax and corporate attorney, had been the go-to guy for every crook who had a problem with the law and their money, and was a favorite among the mob. Life and business had been good until he was forced to testify in a high-profile case tied to the mob. Scared of retribution, Stevick disappeared without a trace. Two years later, having adopted two new identities and personalities—Nick Norton, an attorney, and Eric Henderson, a private investigator—in a different city, a PI from Chicago comes knocking at Henderson’s door with a proposal. A woman had hired the PI to locate her husband, who was last tracked in Henderson’s city, and the PI wanted his help. Henderson accepts the case, perhaps because the husband in question is himself, Warren Stevick. Henderson finds himself treading a dangerous path riddled with murder, blackmail, abduction, and betrayal. Will he make it out alive? Find out in Sham Shamus by Charlotte Stuart.
If you are looking for a mystery novel flavored with crime, thrills, action, suspense, and plot twists, Sham Shamus by Charlotte Stuart is a must-read. The gritty prose unfolds at a dynamic pace, giving readers moments of reflection, tension, and bursts of action. The vivid imagery captured the story’s backdrop with striking clarity. One moment, I was lost in the thoughts of the protagonist, depending on whichever identity he assumed, which often had a sharp edge of self-aware humor. The next thing, I was closely following him on the streets and into closed spaces, helplessly watching him take a beating or narrowly cheat death. This is the type of book that will make your knuckles white from gripping your seat’s armrest and get your heart pounding as you watch the protagonist clash with danger, leaving you relieved every time he survives. It is an instant classic, and I loved it.
