In Kathy-Lynn Cross’s Shattered from Within, six stories and novellas move through horror that begins inside the mind before it reaches the world beyond it. When Emily Was Here follows a woman who has spent thirteen years inside an institution and no longer knows which people around her are real. Maryanna’s Mirror sends a sixteenth-century noblewoman toward forbidden magic through a silver gift from her father. Tainted Currents brings Ceanna to Skelton Lake, where an old massacre still stains the water. Clipped Wings turns death into a meeting between an angel and the demon she was meant to kill. Misplaced traps an ancient predator inside a human body. Lonely Hearts, by guest contributor Amber Hassler, closes the collection with another story about a woman whose own inner life has become dangerous territory.

“I may be a demon, but certain powers, like love, are non-negotiable.” Kathy-Lynn Cross’s Shattered from Within is brilliant supernatural horror, and proves just how effective the impossible becomes when given rules. She puts readers right inside the graveyard of Clipped Wings, where Raziel judges the dead under a moonlit sky until Devin becomes the one soul she cannot read. The best part is the women. I love it when female protagonists in horror are dangerous in their own right, and Cross gives us exactly that. Raziel is my absolute favorite because her exchanges with Devin are genuinely funny, and their affection is believable in a story about death. The Pranic Cypher in Misplaced is excellent too, especially when this ancient predator becomes completely bewildered by human attachment. Well written and wickedly imaginative, readers who enjoy supernatural horror will appreciate this book.
