Sins and Murders by Rocky Burton is the lead story in the Manatee Murders series. Sam stumbles onto a horrible scene. He sees a naked girl, gagged and bound, on a worn-out mattress on the floor. A shadow-like figure is using her for sex as she screams. Horrified at the scene, Sam is unable to look away. Someone or something forces him to watch, and he notices others in the room, shadowy figures watching the assault as he does. He feels himself pulled closer, and worse still, he feels like he is a part of the horror. As a years-long fan of horror stories, particularly those that push hard against the limits of descriptive sex and explicit violence with a mixture of specific paranormal/supernatural aspects, Sins and Murders drew me in like a moth to a flame.
At the risk of giving away a significant plotline that isn’t immediately apparent, I was especially impressed with Burton’s skill in bringing split-personality characters to life, particularly Clyde, whose Cajun/southern slang must have driven the editor or editing program crazy! Regarding language, the characters' word choices may be offensive to some readers, while others will appreciate the verisimilitude (sense of reality) that brings the characters to life and impresses throughout the tale. A big selling point for me, along with true-to-life dialogue, is Rocky Burton’s unapologetically vivid and graphic scene setting and action, reminiscent of the horror stories by writers Richard Laymon and Clive Barker. Sins and Murders is a great start to what will surely be a fascinating series. Rocky Burton has gained a new fan, and I’m looking for his next work of horror.
