Six Seasons by Ellis Pier is a collection of fairy tales and fables. Written in a traditional style, the reader is taken through six short stories, each with a moral and meaning for reflection. Geared towards young adults, the collection begins with the tale of a king, who travels around his realm in search of how to solve his subjects’ problems. Continuing on, Joseph’s Lake is a tale with religious undertones, encouraging the reader to reflect on how fleeting life truly is. In the story In Just One Day, a young prince learns what it means to care for others before himself. Between Books is a conversation between a new and an old book, with a surprising ending. The Example of Kindness shows the sacrifice of one man for his friend, the king. Finally, Pier tells a story about an emperor that cannot sleep.

For a book targeted at young adults, I felt Mr. Pier took the time to really weave together different types of fairy tales. This compilation would prove enjoyable to adults as well, who would find deeper meaning in the unique tales. The images before each story were very colorful and a nice introduction to each tale. I particularly enjoyed Between Books. It was a very interesting take on the mass marketing of books now compared to many years ago. I enjoyed the twist at the end of the story. My least favorite story was Insomnia. I just could not get into it, and found it to be a different take on 1001 Arabian Nights. Overall though, Six Seasons is a well-written collection, with great potential to show the world a different side of fairy tales.
