Slip Away is the story of two broken brothers — Rudy and Rory Orrick —products of a truly dysfunctional family in which suicide is as common as tacos on Tuesdays. Together and apart, they must learn to deal with the tragic circumstances of their lives. One succeeds a little better than the other, at least for a while. In the end, even the relationship between the two of them will be called into question.
Author Joel Durham Jr. must have a unique insight into the minds of troubled young men because his writing is so very genuine and real. As the reader, even a female reader, it was easy for me to connect with young Rory (the main character) on an emotional level. He is so well written and his emotional rawness is conveyed with great talent. In the end, the reader not only understands the actions Rory takes to change his life, but cheers him on! The best part of this story for me is watching the interactions between Rory and those who love, care for him, and yes, even hate him.
Joel Durham Jr. succeeds in not only creating those interpersonal relationships with aplomb, but developing them into real, relatable and honest associations. Brother Rudy is a little harder to understand as his actions and reactions to the happenings in his life are almost robotic and somewhat evil. Rudy was terrifying and terrible. This is a heartrendingly painful story to read. And yet, it is certainly worth the bruise your heart will experience when you read it. I would recommend it to anyone. Wonderfully well written. Good book, great read. Keep up the good work.
