The lure of the nostalgia of summer camp with its peaceful rhythms, comraderies, and tasty s’mores by the campfire – not to mention the flicker of a possible romance with the camp director is enough for Kim Douglas to agree to be the crafts instructor at her childhood summer haven. In S’Mores Can Be Deadly by Violetta Armour, Kim wrestles with the break-up of her marriage and learns to trust again, aided by a reunion with gals who were her fellow camp counselors, along with an earnest bookish camper, and the charms of the handsome camp director, but all are on a collision course with someone who has an act of lethal revenge plotted at innocent Camp Good Acres.
Violetta Armour delightfully brings camp to life in S’Mores Can Be Deadly. I was transported by my own camp memories and craved a toasted, sticky marshmallow treat as I followed Kim’s journey. This mystery coupled with a tale of a budding romance is an enjoyable read and is peopled with authentic characters. The revenge plot unfolds at a believable pace, and the story includes a bonus of an underlying moral lesson. Another bonus is the inclusion of recipes ranging from adult-oriented sangria and one-pot pasta to kid-friendly sloppy joes and s’mores mentioned in the title (thankfully not a deadly version, however). This book is part of the Dangerous Pastimes series, and if the others are as charming, Violetta Armour shows she can write a mystery to satisfy the Nancy Drew in all of us.
