Parenthood is a unique experience. You have someone to share both the good and bad times with, and you have the privilege of watching your children grow and teaching them life lessons, such as how to have confidence in themselves. However, every family is different, so there’s no instruction manual that every parent can follow. In fact, it’s all about learning as you go along and sharing the wisdom that life has given us. Neil Word does precisely that in Someone Please Talk to My Parents! In each chapter, the author speaks from a different perspective, such as a child, a neighbor, or a woman who loves butterflies. Through these viewpoints, he presents stories that invite us to reflect on life and shares parenting advice.
I loved Neil Word’s writing style because it’s perfect for all audiences. Parents will easily relate to the situations described, while children may better understand their parents’ perspectives. The author understands both sides, so his explanations are clear and engaging. He tells us that sometimes children feel they don’t have enough freedom and encourages them to consider that parents are trying to protect them from danger. He also mentions that parents need to recognize that their children don’t always understand the consequences of their actions, so dialogue is essential. Another aspect I liked was the variety of narrators because not all of them are people. One of my favorites is the earth, which speaks of itself as a symbol of stability. Someone Please Talk to My Parents! demonstrates how everyday challenges can strengthen both children and adults.
