Somewhere, Right Now, written by Kerry Docherty and illustrated by Suzie Mason, is a 32-page-long children’s picture book that carries a message I’ve yet to find in any other children’s book. It helps us take control of our minds to shift gears and choose to think in positive ways, especially when confronted with frightening situations (weather-related storms), full of stress (trying to create something and seeing it fail), or simply overwhelming (messy house).
The characters in this story (mom, dad, brother, sister) illustrate negative situations that turn into positive thinking experiences. Of course, this involves disciplining our minds and working at it over time, but the message is clear: you choose what you think, and that choice becomes a habit. No one is forcing any of us to worry, fret, or become angry. We seem able to do that easily enough on our own. But to take the initiative and choosing to dwell on positive things is a concrete step in improving our mental health. Even though it’s written as a child’s story, the lesson is important for all of us, and this book provides an excellent springboard for ideas.
I enjoyed the artwork this book has to offer because it helps the characters take that next step in their positive imagery. Colorful, detailed landscapes describe realistic scenes that are taking place all over the world and help to balance the negative things we face. If we could only learn this lesson for good! Somewhere, Right Now, written by Kerry Docherty, brings a timeless message for all of us to embrace. Highly recommended.
