Ariane Lisboa’s Women & Choices follows the author from her childhood in Brazil, where generations of women in her family influence how she understands the life she wants for herself. With education at the heart of the future her parents imagine, her mother becomes the example she watches most closely. The author takes that example into adulthood, building a technology career before motherhood changes her life. When violence reaches close to her children, questions about what comes next become impossible to ignore. A move to the United States gives those questions a new setting. In America, she must decide what belonging means after leaving Brazil, with those women still in mind as she builds a life increasingly her own. What she inherits gives her a starting point, but the direction belongs to her.
Ariane Lisboa’s Women & Choices is an exceptional memoir, and the author writes about the people who formed her with such affection that they quickly feel familiar. I loved how well she captures the quieter ways people express love, making small memories say a great deal about who they are. Her father, Waldemir, rarely speaks about his feelings at home, yet he returns from every work trip with chocolates for his children. That warmth extends beautifully to the relationships she forms in adulthood. After moving to Texas, where her technology job requires frequent travel, she hires Claudia, a Brazilian woman who helps with her children. Claudia searches out familiar Brazilian ingredients for their meals, preserving a piece of home inside their new life. Well-written and inspiring, readers who enjoy memoirs about women choosing their own lives will adore this.
