Sophia Freeman and the Underground Warriors by T.X. Troan is an action-packed adventure that follows the journey of Sophia, the "Chosen One," and her friend Tim as they try to restore life on their island. The narrative begins with Sophia and Tim surviving a fall from a cliff with an ancient tree monster called Tombermon. Having lost his memory during the fall, Tombermon is convinced he's a good person and is given the name Heromon. Together, Sophia and her crew stumble upon a cave where they find clues left by the legendary inventor Ronuke that could help them defeat Scarlon, a villain who has taken over their island. According to the clues, they must find two mythical weapons called the Ultimatrium and the Rainbow Pearl. The quest for these mythical weapons leads them to new allies called the Remainders, a peaceful group of non-magical creatures. Together, they search for the mythical weapons and must train to defeat Scarlon and his army.
I was particularly impressed by how Sophia and Tim struggled with the idea of keeping Heromon's true identity a secret. It kept me guessing: 'What if Heromon regains his memory? Would he go back to being evil, or would he remain loyal to Sophia?' I was amazed by T.X. Troan's ability to use magical logic during intense action. The characters were well developed, particularly the Remainder's quest to master magic to defeat Scarlon and his army. The illustrations throughout made it easy for me to understand certain scenarios and gave me a clear view of the world of Pandilone Island. Troan has a clear writing style that uses simple and direct language. Sophia Freeman and the Underground Warriors has a really fast pace and is filled with lots of action and suspense. The book explores themes of hope, courage, and family bonds. I recommend this book to readers who are interested in fantastic adventures filled with lots of magical action.
