Scabmuggers by Yvonne Martinez follows a group of brave feminists who raised their voices against blatant misogyny on the Harvard campus during the early 1990s. In 1994, the labor movement was in full swing with the annual Harvard Trade Union Program at the university, which drew thousands of students from around the world. Simone, a young student, joined the movement alongside her fellow feminists, hoping to lend her voice to the cause of justice, equality, and equity. But when one of her friends, Ana, becomes a victim of the unwanted attentions of one of their members, Simone and her friends discover the flagrant sexism that threatens to weaken the labor movement from within. After a shocking assault, Simone joins her fellow sisters to oppose those who seek to silence their voices.

Scabmuggers is a poignant tale that highlights some key social issues that continue to affect society today. Although the story is set in the early 1990s, Yvonne Martinez's narrative resonates powerfully with the contemporary political climate in America. Spinning an engrossing yarn, the author calls out the presence of sexism, racism, and bigotry among leaders of those very political movements that claim to fight against these issues. The narrative is primarily driven by its compelling characters, allowing the plot to serve as a backdrop that enhances the exploration of the central themes. The relationship dynamics between the main characters are intricately woven. Simone, Ana, Debbie, and Elise seem like actual activists. This genuine portrayal is likely the result of the book being inspired by true events. Overall, I found the novel thoroughly riveting and relevant. Highly recommended.
