Sor Juana, My Beloved is MaryAnn Shank's heartfelt literary novel dedicated to the 17th-century Mexican writer and poet Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. During her childhood, Juana would occupy her days with her thirst for knowledge and reading. Her grandfather, who was a kindred spirit, wholeheartedly indulged her literary curiosity during her formative years. She became a nun who enjoyed writing and meeting new, intriguing people who had traveled the world. Despite her humble background, Sor Juana utilized her gift as a writer to carve a name for herself in a male-dominated field. Needless to say, her life wasn't completely free from perilous moments. While fighting to protect her literary legacy, Sor Juana faced her greatest challenge yet—navigating a romantic relationship deemed taboo during Mexico's highly conservative era. This novel captures her fascinating tale.
In Sor Juana, My Beloved, author MaryAnn Shank offers a well-written and highly creative portrayal of the life of Sor Juana de la Cruz within the context of feminism and theology. From cover to cover, this book proved to be an engaging and thought-provoking read. I admire how Shank explored the significant people in Sor Juana's life (like her grandfather) and those who influenced her views on patriarchy. Like any fearless woman during that historical era, Sor Juana can be labeled as being ahead of her time. Shank aptly demonstrated that Sor Juana—through her sincerity, intelligence, and wit—has earned accolades among other renowned writers, both past and present. This novel is an excellent choice for those who enjoy books on female writers and feminism. An enlightening read.
