The Bean and Bun by Amanda Leifeste is a charming, sun-soaked contemporary romance filled with warmth, wit, and just the right dash of mystery. We’re with Aggie Jeffries, who escapes the corporate grind to open a cozy bakery on Sandcastle Island, only to find her dreams crumbling. That is, until Brooks Jagger, a world-weary celebrity novelist with island roots, proposes an unlikely collaboration. As Aggie hosts luxe culinary retreats in Brooks’s ancestral beach house, romantic sparks and buried secrets begin to rise. With nosy neighbors, lingering grief, and a seaside setting brimming with nostalgia, the novel weaves a heartfelt story of second chances, creative reinvention, and the sweet, messy art of falling in love.
Author Amanda Leifeste has a smooth confidence to her writing that perfectly captures the breezy magic of coastal living, and a narrative control that rolls out a cosy romance that’s as comforting as it is refreshing. I like a romance that relies on an interesting clash of personalities, and the chemistry between Aggie and Brooks simmers with charm, humor, and just enough spice as their dialogue spills over page after page of wit with tension underneath. I enjoyed the close narrative focus on them, with every raised brow narrated in perfect timing and with a keen sense of visualisation. It sparks the imagination easily to see them moving through the idylls of island living, and the story will certainly appeal to readers who love slow-burn romance with character depth, that warm sense of community, and a little culinary flair. There are also some deeper themes of grief and second chances that emerge gradually, making for a delightfully layered story that proves healing can come from some unlikely places indeed. Overall, The Bean and Bun is a novel I would highly recommend to fans of witty and enjoyable cozy romance novels.
