Author Biography

I’m Matt Newnham, a writer and children’s author based in West Sussex, England. My lifelong love of storytelling began in childhood, when books were a window to endless worlds of imagination. Over the years, that fascination grew into a passion for creating stories that inspire curiosity, laughter, and learning in young readers.

Before becoming a full-time writer, I spent many years working in the IT and business solutions industry, which gave me a front-row seat to how technology is shaping our future. That experience, combined with my love for adventure and science, helped inspire Space Ranger Fred—a series that blends fun, friendship, and STEM learning in imaginative ways.

I published my first children’s book, Space Ranger Fred and the Shoelace Adventure, in 2015. Since then, Fred’s universe has expanded into new stories, an animated TV project, and even a video game. My goal has always been to make science and space exciting for children, showing that learning can be as thrilling as any adventure.

I write with the hope that every young reader who picks up one of my books finds not only a good story but also a spark of curiosity that stays with them long after the final page.

In Space Ranger Fred and the Great Galactic Bake Off by Matt Newnham, Space Ranger Fred and his partner Zando Centauri arrive on the purple-and-yellow planet to assist Emperor Gandori in preparing for the Great Galactic Bake-Off. With the help of Togz, their alien assistant, they attend to slides from the rocket to the palace courtyard, organize baking stations, and experiment with unusual ingredients, including the mysterious Blue Flakey Snot. Bakers from across the galaxy set up elaborate apparatus and carry on combining unexpected flavors and decorating with extraordinary creativity, while Fred supervises, measures, and keeps track of every step. As cakes rise, cool, and are presented on golden plates, judges taste, examine, and deliberate, with the chaos and inventive activity continuing in equal measure.

Matt Newnham’s Space Ranger Fred and the Great Galactic Bake Off is an absolute delight, and chock-full of humor and imagination. Newnham's story provided my daughter and me with a few nights of fun during our nightly bedtime ritual. Richie Williams’ small but bold illustrations complement the action perfectly, created in a simple comic-book style with primary colors. Every scene popped. There is a lot of playful chaos and silliness, the latter of which is contagious, with all the alien baking techniques and unexpected mishaps. Newnham has given readers a huge mix of quirky characters, inventive culinary creations, and endlessly enjoyable moments. For my daughter, this was one of the first toe-dips into science fiction for kids, and it is a true cosmic delight that readers of all ages will thoroughly enjoy. Recommended.
