Splinters of Heaven by Theo Tsirigotis is set in the occupied province of Getacia, where the Helian Empire moves to crush a revolt before it becomes open war. Syl Scyllus, a senior enforcer tasked with internal security, is sent north to dismantle resistance cells and recover escaped prisoners tied to forbidden powers. Vali, a teenage border soldier from the same province, is pulled into imperial service and seeks advancement as fighting expands from skirmishes into full military operations. Beyond imperial control, Darya, a member of the nomadic Thousand Tribes, survives a disastrous mission and is forced into violence, captivity, and leadership as her people are hunted and divided. Thrust into different angles of the same imperial campaign, all paths narrow toward Bal Maru, a northern fortress whose control determines the fate of an empire.
Splinters of Heaven by Theo Tsirigotis is a massively sweeping epic, invested heavily in three leads who remain brilliantly distinct across a long campaign. I love Darya, whose ascent truly begins when fire pours from her hands during the burning of a seized town, instantly recasting her status among the survivors. The landscapes are spectacularly cinematic, from ash drifting over Breakstone after sustained fighting, to the vast underground chamber beneath Bal Maru, where glowing stone rises like petrified roots. The writing is excellent, and feeds into fully formed world-building, but also shows the author's ability to tie fantasy to real myth. Vels, the central antagonist, directing convergences from the margins, is very much like the Greek Moirai, arbiters of fate that shape outcomes while remaining untouched. Overall, this is a great start to the Pax Terminus series. Very highly recommended.
