Spooky Ghost Stories and Deliciously Haunted Adventures by J.J. Westway is a collection of 10 spooky tales, full of thrills and scares, illustrated by Yasmin Barzegar. In Scary Christmas, Melody and Major decide they don’t want to go with their parents to church on Christmas Eve. They’ve got a good reason, but they didn’t bank on an unexpected visitor that turns into something monstrous. In Misfortune, New Year's Eve in the Calloway house is shaping up to be quite terrifying, while a black cherry tree in the forest behind the Akers’ house hides a strange visitor. These and other stories deliver terror and chills with twists galore.

Spooky Ghost Stories and Deliciously Haunted Adventures by J.J. Westway is an anthology you’ll never forget. If you love scary stories and haunted tales with spooky twists, you’ll love this book. The stories are all very different and easy to get completely involved in. The suspense is real as each tale unfolds, drawing you in with the perfect blend of simple storytelling and terror. All the characters are well-developed, which is not always easy in short stories, but you get to know them well enough. The stories aren’t too scary for younger readers, but are just enough to send shivers down the spine. As the first book in the Terr-or-Treats series, it’s an excellent start, and I hope the series will continue with new stories. It’s a great book for any time of the year because the stories cover all seasons, not just Halloween, as you would expect with a book like this. Highly recommended for anyone who wants an easy, thrilling read.

The collection Terr-or-Treats: Spooky Ghost Stories and Deliciously Haunted Adventures by J.J. Westway features a series of chilling tales that follow ordinary characters as they encounter strange and frightening events. The stories often begin in familiar settings such as family homes, quiet towns, or holiday gatherings before gradually revealing the supernatural elements lurking beneath everyday life. In the opening story, a pair of siblings stay home on Christmas Eve to watch a horror movie, only to be unexpectedly visited by their grandmother, leading to a chilling encounter with something much more sinister. Other stories explore unusual luck rituals, mysterious creatures, and unsettling discoveries that emerge from simple traditions or casual choices. Each story presents a different situation where curiosity, tradition, or chance invites the unknown into ordinary moments.

J.J. Westway writes with an energetic narrative voice that keeps the stories moving quickly. The pacing is fast, with scenes shifting from calm everyday moments to surprising supernatural turns. The storytelling style balances suspense with playful imagination, making frightening moments exciting rather than overwhelming. Each story unfolds clearly, making it easy to follow the characters through their discoveries and challenges. Readers who enjoy ghost stories, mysterious creatures, and unexpected twists will find plenty to enjoy throughout the book. The variety of settings and situations keeps each story fresh, and the shorter story format makes it easy to read one adventure at a time. Fans of spooky tales, campfire stories, and Halloween-themed fiction will enjoy the mix of mystery and fun. Spooky Ghost Stories and Deliciously Haunted Adventures is packed with the television suspense brought to life by Alfred Hitchcock and Rod Serling, but in a book.

Spooky Ghost Stories and Deliciously Haunted Adventures by J.J. Westway is a collection of chilling short stories for older children and pre-teens. Each of the stories features a spooky encounter, often with something that is strange and unusual. Each unique tale is perfect for Halloween, summer camp, or to tell in the dark. Inside these pages, you can expect to encounter the unexpected, from a spooky Christmas where a movie night turns into chaos to a New Year’s Eve undone by an ominous fortune. You never know where the stories will go until the end. Something lurks on every page, where one moment you’ll meet creepy beetles and then the next you’re being haunted by a presence in the forest.

This collection of stories is age-appropriate and doesn’t contain any gore. The tone remains largely light, with J.J. Westway leaning more into suspense and mystery. The style is reminiscent of Goosebumps narratives with an ordinary day twisted by something spooky. Each of the stories features different characters, focuses on ordinary events such as going to the movies, and includes supernatural occurrences. Each one offers a fun premise that can be read as a standalone tale or even enjoyed aloud around a campfire. Standout moments feature a blend of quirky and creepy, such as a train, an alien, a road trip, and robots. Some of the stories feature classic horror tropes, such as summer camp, a gorgeous lake, shortcuts, and a ghost town, cleverly incorporated into coming-of-age tales by mixing first crushes with spooky encounters. Black and white illustrations by Yasmin Barzegar provide visuals of the various beings and encounters, such as an eerie image on a train and an alien in a ship. Spooky Ghost Stories and Deliciously Haunted Adventures is packed with deliciously scary tales and encounters that are as quirky as they are creepy.

J.J. Westaway brings young readers a spine-tingling collection of ten short horror tales in Spooky Ghost Stories and Deliciously Haunted Adventures. Instead of accompanying their parents to church on Christmas Eve, two young siblings choose to watch a horror movie at home, only to encounter an unexpected visitor. A family of four decides to read fortune cookies on New Year's Eve and is taken aback by an unforeseen pest infestation. A couple tries in vain to stop their young son from venturing into the nearby woods, until a blast from the past shatters their worldview. On their way to Tucson, Arizona, a small family's vacation turns into an existential nightmare. Stranded at an abandoned mining town, three middle schoolers stumble upon a box of treasure that belongs to a malevolent spirit.

Packed with nailbiting scenes, Spooky Ghost Stories and Deliciously Haunted Adventures offers thrills and chills galore. J.J. Westaway has written ten captivating tales. Each one features a scrumptious blend of horror, adventure, and mystery with illustrations by Yasmin Barzegar. From the first page onward, these stories grab you by the scruff of your neck and refuse to let go until you've finished reading. The mystery is slowly peeled back one layer at a time. Preteens are going to love this collection. It has the perfect mix of tension, terror, and a sense of adventure that young readers crave. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed these stories. If you're someone who loves the genre of campy horror/adventure, you're going to have a blast with this collection.

Who knew that fun activities like a cozy evening with Grandma, a much-awaited school trip, or even a lakeside vacation could turn deadly? The characters in Terr-or-Treats: Spooky Ghost Stories and Deliciously Haunted Adventures by J. J. Westway most certainly did not. In this book, the characters face anything from monsters masquerading as relatives, aliens pretending to be neighbors, life-sized bugs that can eat you alive in mere minutes, to robots ready to extinguish human existence. In ‘(How We Almost Escaped) Summer Veil Lake,’ a faulty watch makes the world turn in the blink of an eye. Conversely, in ‘Windfall Springs,’ time stands still in a deserted mining town, preserving its ghastly past. Sometimes, a wrong turn toward the desert can be life-altering, literally. Share the scares with us, but don’t expect to escape any time soon!

I loved how Westway put refreshing spins on popular horror tropes. The author created perfect backdrops for the unfolding horror, ranging from a shadowy copse to endless deserts, abandoned mines to derelict rail stations. Whether it is the heart of the wilderness or a cozy kitchen, the author superbly conveys a sense of dread to young readers. The stories often end in cliffhangers, ensuring that the terror lingers even after the audience finishes reading. Yasmin Barzegar’s detailed oil paintings, depicting selected scenes, capture the heart of each piece and make the villains even more horrific. I heartily recommend this book to fans of the Goosebumps series. J. J. Westway’s Terr-or-Treats: Spooky Ghost Stories and Deliciously Haunted Adventures is a perfect read for kids and pre-teens, especially during the spooky season.
