Star’s New York City Adventure: Adventure Cats Book 3 by Denise Alicea tells the story of a compassionate young cat as she explores a new place. The unfamiliar smells amaze and entrance Star. She is fascinated by the intensity and busyness of New York. Star spends the day visiting several famous landmarks in New York, including the American Museum of Natural History, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and Broadway. At each place, Star makes a new friend. When her family stops to buy pretzels, she meets a lost black kitten named Jet. Later, when they visit the Statue of Liberty, Star saves a small dog who is the victim of a group of children. During their picnic at Central Park, Star rescues a pigeon that is struggling with a plastic bag. Broadway is their last stop, and here Star meets an elderly cat named Matilda. Through every encounter, Star shares a valuable lesson.
Denise Alicea provides imaginative descriptions of Star’s foray into ‘big city life’. Throughout Star’s day, her helpfulness and sincerity are evident to the reader. This will no doubt inspire young readers to think more carefully about others around them. Courage, friendship, and responsibility are just a few of the core themes that are highlighted in Star’s New York City Adventure. Sadiqa Akhter’s illustrations emphasize the bustling nature of New York, and children will enjoy seeing Star’s experiences in each place. This book is a fun and heartwarming read, perfect for a bedtime story, as it contains several moral lessons to consider.
