A US cargo ship is set upon by airborne drones and then sunk by a stealth underwater drone. The following day, there’s an explosion at The Grand Bazaar in Tehran. At first, due to the source of the drones, Russia was suspected of being behind the attacks, but then there was an attack on a Russian merchant ship by a mysterious gang with a blond American man as their leader. In Paris, Agent Jake Stone rescues a young Jewish girl who is kidnapped by mercenaries, also headed by the same blond American. Could the Americans be behind all of this, or is there something much more sinister going on? State of Betrayal is an edge-of-your-seat political thriller with a plot that could have been plucked right from today’s headlines. There is political intrigue galore, and when it’s revealed which nation is behind the attacks and their ultimate goal, it’s as frightening as it is plausible. Jake Stone is the James Bond of the 2020s; he’s equally skilled at negotiation as he is at hand-to-hand combat. There’s plenty of both in this narrative. This is book two of the series, and there are some familiar faces, with Jake’s Nemesis boss Scott James, and the now president of the US, Thomas Owens. Book two introduces a new Mossad agent, Adi Abrams, to the mix, who I hope remains a major character in future novels. State of Betrayal is an absolute page-turner, so block out your weekend as you won’t be able to put it down once you pick it up. Lovers of thrillers with politics, terrorism, and loads of action will enjoy this book as much as I did. I can't wait for book three!
