Strength of Shadows by Arianis Rosa is a heart-racing tale about three teens, Ariela, Alana, and Xavier, who undertake a thrilling adventure of self-discovery and bravery. The teens are hunted by a menacing villain―the Absolver―because of their newly emerging superpowers. Initially, their paths intersect after falling through a wormhole, where they briefly interact with each other. After that, they are teleported to a faraway, magical world where they meet other teens with supernatural powers like them. Ariela is detained with teen Asorians, who train her to use her powers for good. Alana and Xavier, however, camp with the Blackthorns, who carry out the diabolical bidding of the Absolver. Simultaneously, Alex―Alana's adopted sister―desperately searches for her. Alex collaborates with a ghost girl, Elizabeth, during her quest to find Alana. Will Ariela, Alana, and Xavier discover and pursue their unique destinies? Will they ever reconnect with their loved ones back on earth?

I love the fact that Rosa gives most of the teens, especially Ariela, Alana, and Xavier, shared trauma and loss. Their unified pain makes their struggles and motives even more poignant, personal, and relatable. With complex and sometimes morally grey characters, readers will become thoroughly immersed in this fascinating narrative. I highly recommend this read!
