"In Stress Pandemic: The Lifestyle Solution" Paul Huljich relates how stress drove him to a mental breakdown and how he was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and told he would be captive to medication for the rest of his life. Unable to accept the prognosis, he decided to strike out on his own. He was a wealthy man with multiple resources and he developed a program in which he combined physical exercise, meditation and a strict diet in order to phase himself off medication. Reportedly he has been medication-free for some years now. Mr. Huljich's premise is that many dysfunctional mind conditions including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, phobias, panic attacks, post-traumatic stress, eating disorders, ADHD and compulsive behavior disorders are all a result of the inability to handle stress rather than a result of an inheritable family disorder.
The book is well-researched and it is obvious that whatever steps the author took to reduce his stress also resulted in the remediation of the symptoms leading to his mental breakdown. We often hear of "miracle cures" in individuals with life-threatening physical disorders and they all appear mysterious. However, the one thing all the miraculous recoveries seem to have in common is a complete lifestyle change. The author credits his recovery to this factor as well. As such, this is not a new concept. The fact that the change in lifestyle also resulted in a change in physical and mental functioning is one which will delight many readers. The program obviously helped the author and that is the way with many self-help books. It would appear that an individual would need to be rather compulsive to carry through with the program and the fact that the author appeared predisposed to those characteristics obviously contributed to the success of his journey toward a healthy lifestyle.
