Succession by Douglas Schofield begins rather simply with a look in at the wedding reception ceremony of the Prince of Wales in 1759, an otherwise obscure event, the significance of which will reverberate throughout the book and have an impact of immeasurable proportions on the real life events. The book is a winding yet gripping tale of how the effects of this badly conceived wedding transcend generations and centuries and provide the British Royal Family with a "royal pain."
The book captures in vivid details the plain and simple, yet eventful, life of Dr. Emma Parks. Emma had been a fighter all her life. As a child she fought to remain sane while her world around her was falling apart. As a teenager she fought to earn her education, as a doctor she fought hard to earn her respect, and now as a kidnapped individual she is fighting to live. The only question remains in her mind - why me? A brilliant doctor, and an even better human being whose undeclared, possibly unrealized need for affection and companionship is about to lend a cruel blow to her career, is spun off into events far above her understanding and beyond her worst nightmares. In a matter of hours, her world is turned upside down and the seemingly life changing events of the preceding days pale in comparison and are reduced to forgotten, insignificant memories compared to the events unfolding before her eyes. At one point it seems like a bad dream. It’s anything but that.
A brilliantly written, steadfastly composed and extremely well researched book. This book has all the qualities to become a bestseller. It is action packed, keeps the reader on their seat, does justice to the characters, has a bit of romance, and tells a winding, gripping tale about arguably the world's most loved and hated royal family.
