Summer Fling by Jerica MacMillan is a powerful opening to the Players of Marycliff University series, a powerful contemporary romance with multiple plot elements that will positively surprise readers. Abby isn’t an outgoing kind of girl and she uses her brains more than her heart when it comes to love and relationships. Her life is lived between her home town and school, and her upbringing has programmed her for anything but casual sex. Lance has an irresistible charm, looks that can kill, and he is the sportsman that attracts women easily, but he has a reputation: he never sees the same woman twice. When Lance and Abby bump into each other in an unusual way during a party, they find themselves falling for each other. For Abby, it would be just one summer adventure, so it won’t hurt. For Lance, Abby is just another one of his conquests. But what seems to be a fling soon develops into a love that carries them beyond themselves. Will they be able to set the limits? It’s for the reader to find out.
Summer Fling is one of those stories to be read and re-read for its sheer beauty. Jerica MacMillan develops characters that are powerful and a setting that is so real most readers will feel like they are part of its décor. The conflict is well developed and it helps to move the story even faster. Lance is fast falling in love with a girl he has to leave behind in a couple of weeks to manage his father’s workshop, and Abby is desperately longing for a man who is leaving soon and she knows her family situation won’t allow her to travel anywhere with him. How will they handle this? Readers will be hooked from the very beginning of this page-turning story and surprises will only keep on coming until the satisfactory denouement. MacMillan has strong storytelling skills and her writing is heartwarming and flows naturally; her voice is clear and many readers will most likely identify with it. This one is highly entertaining and engaging.
