Deborah Smith Pegues is a CPA who is admittedly a workaholic who had an unhealthy attachment to her Mercedes convertible. Her book, Supreme Confidence: Secrets to Bold and Fearless Living, has fairly short chapters that have bible references, modern references, scriptures, and challenges.
A few years ago, a famous minister stated that if you are going to be successful and be in a leadership role, get used to being lonely. This is so true. When you are successful, the envy of others will cause them to belittle and criticize you. This is a manifestation of their insecurities. Eliminating naysayers is a smart move.
Pegues defines insecurity as “an unbelieving mindset, rooted in fear and nourished by spiritual and natural ignorance”. Sounds ugly, huh? It is harmful, also. God made us. He wants us to be different. We must accept that. Pegues refers to the “superwoman” in Proverbs. That is definitely my favorite book of the Bible. All women should strive to be like her. Pegues points out that she is a strong, self-assured woman; she is not insecure!
Pegues explains that confidence is faith in God’s gifts to you. Do you have faith in yourself, God’s creation? Do you have passion? If so, that is what God envisioned for your life. Just be careful not to be prideful.
Overcoming your past challenges is mentioned. Also mentioned is having confidence in your personal relationships. Sometimes the negativity comes from inside ourselves. She describes how to “rest” on scripture. I have heard it described as “savoring”. She also explains that giving and receiving negative feedback in a healthy manner is important. I guess that is one for me to work on.
The cover of Supreme Confidence: Secrets to Bold and Fearless Living sort of gives it a self-help look. I suppose it is to a degree. It is also a devotional book. The idea that God does want us to be confident, so we may obtain our purpose/passion is a rarely addressed topic. Pegues addresses the issue brilliantly.
